Our story

A roastery built around a single idea — that the most interesting coffee in the world is being grown three hours from where we live.

Chapter 1

Started in a kitchen, in 2021.

Toops began as a 1 kg sample roaster on a kitchen counter in Hyderabad. Two friends, a borrowed refractometer, and one pressing question — why are the best coffees grown in our backyard so hard to find on a café menu in our own city?

We bought directly from a single farm in Coorg that first year. Sundays were spent driving estate roads, evenings spent cupping. The coffee was good. The case for an Indian specialty brand built on Indian estates was stronger than we expected.

Chapter 2

The first café, in 2023.

The Jubilee Hills flagship opened in February 2023 — a slow bar in front, a 12 kg roaster behind glass at the back. Customers can watch a roast finish while they drink the previous one. It is the most direct version of the brand we can make.

Filmnagar followed a year later — a smaller, quieter room. Pour-over only, public cupping every Saturday at 11 am. Both rooms run the same coffees, the same prices, the same hours-of-roast-date promise.

Chapter 3

Twelve estates, one harvest map.

Today we work with twelve estates across Coorg, Chikmagalur, the Anamalais, the Shevaroys and the Baba Budangiris. Every bag carries the estate name, the altitude, the variety, the process and the roast date. Nothing is anonymous and nothing is blended at origin.

The harvest runs January through March. Cherries are processed at the estate, green coffee rests for sixty days, the first roast of any new lot ships seven days later. Subscribers get the new seasonal automatically.

Chapter 4

What's next.

A second roastery in 2026, sized for wholesale. A small barista training programme out of the Filmnagar bar. And a longer-term project with a producer-collective in the Wayanad hills — a traceable cooperative model where a single bag credits five small farmers, not one estate.

Everything else stays the same. Two cafés. Twelve estates. One bag at a time.
